Welcome to AMEC

The Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives is a statewide organization representing Missouri’s 47 electric co-ops. We don’t generate electricity. Instead, AMEC provides needed services to the co-ops which do. Since our founding in 1937 our mission has been to provide a means for electric cooperatives to work together and accomplish things collectively that they could not do as effectively or efficiently on their own.

We are a grass roots organization. We only do what our members ask us to do. Through district level meetings concerns and issues of statewide importance make their way from the local electric co-op to the AMEC board of directors. Only when we receive marching orders through this process is a new program developed or action taken.

Throughout the years Missouri’s electric co-ops have asked our government relations department to represent their interests before the state legislature and state regulators.

They asked us to co-ordinate the training of electric co-op employees and we responded by developing an electric lineman training program that is the envy of the nation.

We help them communicate with their members by publishing the Rural Missouri magazine. We assist in marketing. We helped established a statewide worker’s compensation insurance pool for electric co-ops which has saved co-ops – and therefore members – millions of dollars. We operate a full-service print shop, house a credit union for co-op employees and even provide the large tent that many co-ops use for their annual meetings.

We coordinate some youth programs, such as the Rural Electric Youth Tour to Washington. Recently our members asked us to address the dangerous lack of weather warning systems in rural Missouri. We responded with an innovative effort to cover all rural areas of the state with NOAA weather radio systems.

But no matter what AMEC does to assist our member electric co-ops we always remember that we exist to serve the cooperative, and by extension, the individual member. We have provided information on this website that we hold will further your understanding of Missouri’s electric cooperatives in general but, as always, we encourage you to turn to your own local electric cooperative first for specific needs.
